Many have asked this particular question since people know that richlite is made of paper and resin. But, what is this thing? This particular kind of resin is made of formaldehyde and phenol.

These are potent chemicals, but when combined, they made a harmless, inert substance called the phenolic resin. The paper is then soaked in the substance, molded, baked and heated or pressed to give you the fingerboard you have in your guitar.

Originally developed over 70 years ago for industrial tooling and pattern making, Richlite has expanded into a premium surface material used in the aerospace, marine, action sports, culinary, architecture, and design industries, and in machine shops and automotive manufacturing.

Dense and durable, yet easily tooled, pleasing to the eye, and with its smooth, natural aesthetic, Richlite has become a choice material for a wide range of architects, designers, industrial manufacturers and product developers. From guitar fret boards, culinary cutting surfaces, skateparks, mobile phone cases, industrial tooling molds, and router blocks, Richlite can be found in a wide range of products and industries.

The process of creating Richlite is both simple and complex. Rolls of paper are saturated with a thermosetting resin before being cut to length and laid up by hand. Richlite can be pressed to order from 3mm to 75mm in a range of sheet sizes up to mm x mm. Richlite is shipped from the factory with a mill surface which can be used raw in some applications.

Some applications need to be processed by a fabricator to create a leathered or honed surface for the best performance. We support Richlite by offering architects, designers and fabricators, samples, product and technical information and supplying the material.
