I thought I'd share a few of my favorite products that helped me cope with the hair loss and that I'm using to help my hair grow back. Love Your Melon Beanies. These are my favorite brand of beanies. I have several of them from my winters in New York City. My favorite style of beanies to wear throughout chemo were the Pom Beanies. They're super soft and feel comfortable against your bare head. I wore these beanies to nearly all of my chemo infusions because they keep it so damn cold in there!!
Nioxin Shampoo and Conditioner. I love this system from Nioxin! Now, though they promote thicker hair, please keep in mind that during chemo this just isn't a logical thing to expect.
However, what I did love about shampooing with this system during chemo is the minty-fresh feeling you get. I suggest avoiding shampoos with sodium lauryl sulfate, a chemically-derived detergent. Also, stay away from parabens such as methylparaben. These are chemically derived preservatives that are not healthy to use on your skin or hair.
Do not use Nioxin or other scalp stimulator products. While they are great post-chemo, we find they can be an irritant to the scalp during treatment.
Unfortunately, chemotherapy-induced hair loss will not be helped by these products because you are losing hair from a cellular level. I do not recommend using heavy lotions full of petroleum and fragrances. Petroleum suffocates the skin. Raw, organic coconut oil is an option. This will keep the scalp hydrated and help with minor irritation.
I personally suggest applying emu oil to your scalp if it is itchy. This soothing transdermal oil is chemical-free has anti-inflammatory properties. Note: NOT all emu oils are created equal! If you have cradle cap, I suggest massaging emu oil into your scalp. Pharmacies usually offer other forms of minoxidil that are cheaper.
A person should discuss the risks and benefits of hair regrowth treatments with their doctor before using them. A range of minoxidil products is available for purchase online. Losing hair while receiving chemotherapy can be upsetting, but the loss is usually only temporary. Finding a suitable wig or hairpiece can help as an individual waits for their hair to regrow. Turbans and other types of headgear are also available that may be cooler and more comfortable to wear.
Although cancer cells are the main target of chemotherapy drugs, hair follicle cells often die as an unwanted consequence, resulting in hair loss. Traction alopecia is hair loss caused by tight hairstyles.
