Placing it on armour will protect you from instant death spells too. This combination won't work against Ruby and Emerald though. You can check the various materia to see what statuses they have on-screen as well, this can inflict or protect from them.

Using the Materia on Cloud or Yuffie can good as they have both a high Strength and Magic , making them useful at either ability.
