How many cymbals should i have

Join Date Jan Posts 2, I mean if you feel you need that extra cymbal all the time while your playing, mabye a higher sounding one or visaversa, then go out and buy it. Lafirin, the point of this thread was to try and find out how many you enjoy playing with for your style of music, I wanted to know how many you think you should have Meaning you don't have the money to get what you want, all to familiar.

I use 4 14", 16", 16" thin, 18". I play a pretty wide variety of music and less than that just won't cut it. Anymore would probably be overkill. I like a 16" crash, a 14" crash. I think that would be enough for me the initial questions was about how many crashes we would play with. I would like to add a 12' splash, and a 16' china to the mix along with the ride and the hi-hat, of course.

I would like to upgrade my cymbals, but I think I would stay with this basic configuration. I think it would give me the widest possible musical latitude.

Here is my list, and it is still growing, you can never have enough cymbals in my opinion. Pdp, you just have a weird thing for cymbals and some kind of cash flow coming from somewhere. I'm playing a 4-piece set-up 22x18, 12x9, 16x16, 14x5. I'm quite comfortable with this set-up as is, but, I was thinking of ditching a crash for compactibility Some of my band members don't agree with my descison as they feel that I should have way more cymbals Either way, I tried explaining that I can play 2 crashes just like I play 3 crashes In the end, I'll do what I want, but, I just wondered if any of you have run into this situation before.

And what's your take on cymbals Hopefully all that makes sense Unregistered user. It's really up to you, there's no rule book. I play in a few bands - most of which are jazz-type outfits where I use rides and hats. I also play in a punk rock band where I use a ride and one crash [19"] that almost qualifies as a ride.

Thread starter underratedcowbell Start date Dec 2, When I started drumming, about 25 years ago, my goal was to have as many cymbals I could gey my hands on. I once gigged about a year or so with 10 cymbals and hi-hat in my cymbal bag, so imagine the weight I was carrying around!

The years went by and I started downsizing my cymbal collection considerably because my influences in music changed, I got fed up of carrying all that crap and I came to the conclusion that I was either hiting a certain cymbal no more than a few times during gigs or on the contrary I was hitting to much cymbals, many more than the songs asked for just to justify myself the huge investment.

Nowadays I carry a pair of hi-hats, a crash and a ride, or if I am in a down to earth kind of day I only carry a pair of hi-hats and a crashable ride. I have never been happy in my life! I also like the idea having a bright and a dark set of each so I'm still cymbal hunting a little bit. For me the perfect amount is 2 crashes, 2 splashes, hats, ride and China. I have 2 rides, about various crashes, a few effects crashes, a few sets of hats and I am good. That covers all of my bases. However many is needed to get the sounds you are looking for. Fewer and fewer for me. As modern sounds have trended towards dark, washy, and low in the mix, I've shifted to thin crashable rides that cover a lot of territory. Sold my pingy ride-only rides, got rid of my small bright crashes. Markkuliini DFO Master.

I'm totally comfortable doing gigs with hats and and one cymbal. BUT I want to have many of those "one cymbals" in my possession. There are really two questions here: How many cymbals do you need to play what you want to play on a set?

AND How many cymbals do you need to own? The answer to the first question varies as much as setups vary from person to person. Seb77 DFO Master. I have quite a few cymbals at home, but on a gig, I rarely use more than two or three plus hi-hats.
